Scorpions are a common pest in Texas and are most active during the hot summers. Scorpion is a venomous arthropod that is closely related to spiders, mites and ticks. There are many scorpion species found throughout Texas. However, it is the striped bark scorpion that is mostly found inside our homes. As we are in the peak of scorpion season, A Tex-Pest Management will share why scorpions invade your home and some of the best control methods.
Striped Bark Scorpion Identification
The striped bark scorpion can reach between 2 to 3 inches long. They are either a light yellow brown or a reddish brown color with dark stripes going down their tail. Scorpions like to hide during the day and wander around at night seeking prey. Scorpions have been known to eat insects, spiders, lizards and even mice. Scorpions are great climbers. However, they cannot grip on top of smooth surfaces and cannot climb up glass or smooth metals. You can see scorpions climbing up walls, trees, and rocks, mostly at night. Scorpions have a unique skin that will glow in the dark when under a blue light. During the day, scorpions will hide underneath rocks or debris. A disturbed scorpion will react defensively and sting anything close enough. Scorpions have a painful sting and their venom can cause a burning like pain followed by a tingling or numbing sensation for several days. For young children, the elderly, or those with allergic reactions, the scorpion sting can require medical attention. As a result, scorpions are considered a dangerous pest that demand proper control.
What Attracts Scorpions?
When controlling scorpions you will want to start by reducing any enticements. Scorpions are attracted to water and are frequently found in bathtubs, toilets, sinks or leaky areas. Outside they will look for a water source. Often the pet water bowl, birdbath or pond is enough to bring in a whole population of scorpions. To help reduce scorpion populations, start by eliminating potential water sources both inside and outside of the home. Make sure the grading around the home is level to prevent puddles from forming. Avoid water features outside your home if you can. Next, keep the grass and surrounding vegetation trimmed. Scorpions hunt for prey in dense vegetation. If possible, keep the outer perimeter of the home clean and free of any kind of debris or plants that are too dense.
Sealing Home from Scorpions & Pests
It is also important to seal off any cracks around the outside of the home. Windows and doors must close tightly. At times doors and windows need maintenance to keep out pests. You will want to make sure there are no areas of the home where scorpions can enter. Hot spots, such as the garage, are places you can use sticky scorpion traps to help capture and kill scorpions that wander into the garage or shed. The use of a pesticide may be needed to help protect the outside and inside of the home. A pest control service has an excellent chemical formula that works on scorpions. Due to the outer shell of scorpions, most pesticides will not work on them. It require a special chemical formula designed specifically for scorpions.
