German Cockroach Facts & Identification

A-Tex Pest Management rescues homes and businesses in Austin, Texas and surrounding areas with our cockroach control service. One of the more commonly found cockroaches (and the hardest to get rid of) are German Cockroaches. German Cockroaches are only approximately 1/2”-5/8” long by adulthood. Their colors are typically shades of tan and range to a light brown color. German cockroaches have wings, but are flightless insects that scurry about. Generally, German cockroaches will choose warm and moist areas to live in. Just like other species of cockroaches, German cockroaches are scavengers and will eat anything from starches, sweets, grease, and meat products. Most of their favorable delicacies are conveniently located in garbage cans and they will often be spotted among piles of garbage, dumpsters, and trash cans. German cockroaches are nocturnal, like so many other species, and if you spot one during the day it’s more than likely the cause of extreme population population, stress, or lack of food or a combination.

Health Problems Caused by German Cockroaches

In addition to bites that may cause irritation, swelling and lesions; German cockroaches also spread disease. The principle diseases transmitted by German cockroaches are different forms of gastroenteritis such as food poisoning, diarrhea, and dysentery. The bacteria that cause these diseases is spread by German cockroaches when they forage and walk on your food and food preparation areas.
