Possums are omnivores and will eat just about anything including insects, meat, vegetables, fruits, grains, meat and even animal feces. When hungry, they will raid compost piles, pet food bowls and garbage cans. On occasion, possums may contract rabies but this is rare. They are however carriers of fleas, ticks, mites and other parasites that harbor disease and viruses. Possum feces can contaminate the area and pose serious health risks such as salmonella, leptospirosis, toxoplasmosis and even tuberculosis!
Possum Protection and Prevention
Possums can be a nuisance in both urban and rural areas. They tend to live under homes and porches, in sheds and even in attics as they are excellent climbers. They can become a major problem if left unchecked. A possum in your attic or crawlspace can damage drywall, insulation, air ducts and electrical wires which can ultimately cause a fire. After the nuisance possum is removed, repairs and exclusion must be done to prevent other animals or rodents from re infesting these affected areas. A-Tex Pest Management can clean up, perform the necessary repairs, relocate any possums away from your residence and prevent them from coming back.
