Any of these termites can be devastating, and if you suspect termites are in your home or business, call us in immediately to prevent excessive damage.
Eastern Subterranean Termite Characteristics
Eastern Subterranean Termites are social insects with three organized groups within the colony; workers, soldiers, and reproductive (swarmers). Workers are cream colored that consume the cellulose materials and feed the colony. Soldiers are approximately ¼” long and are equipped with large jaws to combat enemy intruders. The reproductive termites are known as swarmers and are winged until they leave the colony to establish a new colony. Once they have found a favorable location they will shed their wings and commence reproduction. The kings and queens of the colony, so to speak, are typically black or dark brown, about 3/8” long and have 2 pairs of wings until the new colony is established.
Arid Land Subterranean Termite Size
Arid Land Subterranean Termites are similar in appearance to the Eastern Subterranean Termites, and have the same three castes to bring the colony together. The workers consume the brush, cut wood, dead tree limbs and even animal manure. The arid land subterranean termites can still inflict damage to your home or business, but they do not contribute as much damage as their other subterranean termite cousins.
Formosan Subterranean Termite Swarms
Formosan Subterranean Termites have the three castes of their colony like the other two species of termites as well, and thrive in warm climates. The worker termites are very similar looking to the other species of subterranean termites. The other termite classes have a slight difference; the head on the soldier for example, is more oblong where the other species’ heads are more rectangular. These soldiers are also far more aggressive than their cousins. Formosan Termites live in the soil, and will often tunnel their way into your through it.
