Most people are not crazy about spiders and don’t want to live with them. A lot of people associate spiders with venomous bites, creepy houses and other unpleasant things. But, with the exception of spiders like black widows and brown recluses, most spiders are not dangerous to humans. The common house spider is one of the most prevalent spiders you will encounter in your home. If you live in an area with more dangerous spiders like the black widow or brown recluse, you will want to keep them out of your home.
Why Do Spiders Come Inside Your Home?
Spiders come into our homes looking for food, water and shelter. They will come in through doors, windows, air vents, and any other openings. They will get in through gaps around spots where cables, pipes and plumbing come into your home. Check your home for potential entry points and seal them up if you want to avoid living with spiders. Spiders also get into our homes by hiding in things you bring into your home, like plants, firewood, boxes that have been in storage, etc. Check for spiders before you bring these items indoors. Some spiders prefer moist environments and will therefore be found in crawlspaces or other areas that are damp. Others prefer dry environments like in the high corners of your home, air vents and the attic. Most spiders live in areas of your home that are not fully visible or are cluttered. These areas make it easier for them to hide.
Are Spiders Dangerous?
Most spiders are not dangerous to humans but the webs they create can become a nuisance. Spider webs also have a way of making your home look messy. Most spiders will only bite if they feel threatened and while these bites are not deadly, they can be dangerous and painful. Spider venom can cause discomfort with short term side effects. If the symptoms of a spider bite become worse over a 24 hour period you need to seek medical attention. It is always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to spider bites. You just never know how you or a family member will react to a spider bite. Pets, young children and the elderly are more prone to a severe reaction to toxic spider bites.
Spider Prevention
Keep spiders out of your home by looking for loose or torn screens, check to make sure doors have a tight seal when they are closed and try and decrease outdoor lighting that will attract spider, especially near windows and doors. The pesticides you can use to control spiders can be harmful to you and your family if they are used incorrectly or excessively. Using twice as much won’t be more effective and can be dangerous to your health. Always read the directions and follow them.
