Common Summer Wild Animal Control in Austin, TX; Raccoons, Armadillos, Snakes & More

Each season Texas must endure various pests. One selection of pest that can become a major problem for Texas homes is wildlife pests. There are a number of different wildlife pests that will come and attempt to invade homes or cause damages as well as various threats. A-Tex Pest Management will share the major wildlife pest problems found in Central Texas and what you can expect to see this summer season.

What Kind of Wild Animals are a Danger & Nuisance in Texas?

Raccoons – These little thieves or bandits of the night are well known for raiding garbage cans and yards. They seek out food and sometimes even shelter inside or under homes. After they mate they will look for a safe place where they can find food for themselves and their pups. That place is often in the attic spaces or underneath homes or other structures. Raccoons are well known for the major damages they cause to homes, yards, and even the harm they cause pets and humans.
Opossums – Opossums look much like an oversized rat with a long hairless tail, gray scraggly fur and a white face. They are not very aggressive creatures by nature. However, they will attempt to defend themselves if necessary. They can carry disease and even rabies. Even so, contamination is very low in opossums and in most case they are only considered a nuisance. They too will invade homes or yards in search for food. If an opossum is found wandering in your yard, give it plenty of space and if it lingers, contact a wildlife removal service.
Fox Squirrels – given their name for their fox like coloring and markings, the fox squirrel is an extremely invasive pest. Fox squirrels will find various ways to enter the attic space of a home for nesting sites, which they will destroy over time. Like rats, fox squirrels will chew through home insulation, wiring, walls, and roof framing. Like other rodents, fox squirrels can carry disease as well.
Rat Snake & Diamond Back Rattlesnake – There are two major snake species seen during the summer season. One is the rat snake, and the second is the diamond back rattlesnake. These two species look very similar. They share the same brown and white patterns. Additionally, the rat snake will behave like a rattlesnake. It will begin shaking its tail in the hope to trick predators that are threatening them. In this way, they hope the predator will leave them alone. However, they do not have a rattler and their heads, particularly by the back jaw line, is much smaller. A diamond back rattlesnake has a larger head and jaw line which holds the venom sacks. They also have a rattler and are lighter in color. The rat snake is harmless and doesn’t have any venom. Although they may bite out of defense, which can hurt, they aren’t poisonous. However the diamond back rattlesnake has a lethal bite which contains deadly venom. For those who are not familiar with snakes it’s recommend you avoid any snake that is found passing through in case it may be dangerous. If necessary contact a wildlife removal service. A-Tex Pest Management offers snake repellents as well as removal services.
Armadillos – Armadillos are well known to cause damages to yard and gardens while digging holes for burrows. They will eat up the surrounding vegetation. However, even though armadillos are not very aggressive and often run away when they see people, they are known to harbor diseases such as leprosy. It is recommended that you have a wildlife service remove the animal and for homeowners to keep their distance.
