What Attracts German Cockroaches?
Restaurants, hotels, and other commercial buildings as well as apartments, houses are commonly infested by German cockroaches as they are a widely distributed urban pest. The two dark parallel lines that run from the back of the head to the wings are fairly distinct against the primary color that ranges from tan to light brown. These cockroaches vary between ½ inch and 5/8 inches in length. These cockroaches are flightless though they have fully developed wings. Relatively higher degrees of warmth and moisture are the needed climates for German cockroaches and due to their needs, when they come inside, they are warm moist areas such as kitchens and bathrooms, close to plumbing and appliances. Being omnivorous, German cockroaches are known to eat nearly anything in their path. They are, however, particularly fond of grease, meats, starches, and sweets. For a convenient food source, they primarily garbage. Emerging from their hiding spots at night to forage for their food and water, German roaches are nocturnal pests. During the day, they will hunker down in a dark, humid, and warm nook, crack, or crevice. Although these pests are nocturnal, when food and/or water is scarce, if there numbers are too populated, or a recent application of pesticides occurred, their activity is not limited to the dark hours, and will be seen in the day.
Why are German Cockroaches So Hard to Get Rid Of?
When compared to other common cockroach species, the smaller German roach is more capable of concealing themselves in tighter spots. Due to their persistence, these roaches can be difficult to eliminate. Additionally, Germ cockroaches infest an area faster than most other species as there are more eggs per capsule and they require the shortest amount of time to grow from hatching to being sexually mature.
Can German Roaches Hurt You?
German cockroaches secrete odors that effects the flavor in different foods, as few realize. People may especially notice the odor from their concentrated secretions, when the population is high enough. Disease-producing organisms including protozoans, viruses, and bacteria, is frequently attached the cockroach’s body. Primary diseases spread by these cockroaches include different forms of gastroenteritis such as food poisoning, dysentery, diarrhea, and other such illnesses. As mentioned, they spread these contaminates after getting them from foraging and their travels, and deposit them on food, utensils, and other surfaces. Depending a person’s tolerance, the allergy triggers produce watery eyes, sneezing, congestion of nasal passages, skin rashes, along with potentially triggering asthma from the fecal matter and cast skins.
