What Repels or Deters Squirrels in the Attic in Volente, TX? Seal Squirrel Entry Points & More

Watching a squirrel outside your window as it scampers across your yard is adorable. They look so cute and cuddly as they run from here to there. However, when one of those cuddly animals makes its way into your attic, it turns ugly real quick. They can wreak havoc on your house if they start to build their nest inside your attic. A-Tex Pest Management is here to share some tips to help you keep these pests out of your attic.

Trim Trees Away from House to Keep Squirrels Away

If you have trees that are planted near your home, they could be the cause for the squirrel activity. Squirrels build their nests in trees and if they have access to your home via the branches, they will choose your home over a tree every time. You should trim your trees so that the branches are 6-8 feet away from your house to avoid this problem. If you don’t want squirrels in your trees at all, you can cover the trunk of your tree in sheet metal. This makes it so that they can’t climb it easily. You only need to cover the bottom 18 inches with the metal.

Seal Entry Points of Squirrels

You can find entry points into your attic by inspecting both the exterior and interior of your attic. It doesn’t take a very large hole for squirrels to climb inside. If you notice that there are any holes, you should fill them or cover them right away. If you are having a hard time seeing any access points, but know that there must be one there somewhere, you can look from the interior of your attic. If you see any light shining through, you know that there is a hole somewhere.

Avoid Trapping a Squirrel in Your Attic

Before you seal off any entry points, you want to make sure there isn’t a squirrel in there. If you end up trapping it inside, the squirrel will likely die and then your problems are much larger. To check for any squirrel activity, ball up some newspaper and stuff the hole with it. The next day, if the newspaper is gone, you know that you have a problem that needs to be dealt with before you cover the opening.
