Needless to say, if you have a problem with any stinging insects in your yard, it can make a summertime BBQ quite miserable. A-Tex Pest Management would like to educate you on some of the most common stinging insects in your area.

Bees

Some of the most common types of bees in Texas are honey bees, bumblebees, mason bees and carpenter bees. Bees play an important role in pollination of fruits, vegetables and flowers. Bumblebees usually build their nests underground, in a pile of dead leaves or a stack of logs. They can be very aggressive if they are disturbed and for this reason should be left alone. Bumblebees are very social and they defend their nests by stinging which makes them dangerous if they feel they are threatened for any reason. Honey bees are the only bee that dies after it stings someone. Their population has been drastically low because of disease of other predators. Honey bees pollinate over 100 crops in the U.S. not to mention, the benefit of their honey. If it is at all possible to save a colony of honey bees, it should be done. If they are not posing a risk to humans a beekeeper can remove the colony before the area is treated.

Wasps

Several types of vespids cause concern in Texas including paper wasps, cicada killers, yellowjackets and hornets. Paper wasps are usually found building their nests in gutters or the eaves of houses. They usually don’t sting unless they feel they are in danger. The Cicada Killer is an intimidating looking wasp, but doesn’t pose a large threat of stinging. They fly quickly and aggressively, trying to defend their nest if they feel threatened. If provoked, they will sting. Yellow jackets often build their nests in tubing or other hallowed out openings. They are often found under decks, in playground equipment or other places that have hallow places to build their paper-like nests. Their colonies can get quite large and if their nest is disturbed, they will become very aggressive. They are capable of multiple stings and can be extremely dangerous. The most common hornets in KY are European hornets and bald faced hornets. The bald-faced hornets build large, football sized nests in trees and other shrubs. They only use their nest during one season and abandon it in the fall. European hornets are large insects and some people even consider them beneficial since they prey on other insects including bees and yellow jackets. Hornet stings are particularly painful because of the high amount of venom released with each sting. They can also sting multiple times as well.
