Identifying Brown Recluse Spiders
The Brown Recluse spider is brown or tan in color. Like most spider species, the Brown Recluse spider can be divided into three major parts: the legs, abdomen and the cephalothorax. The Cephalothorax is the section where the legs of the spider are attached. On the cephalothorax you’ll see a marking that most recluse spider species have. The Brown Recluse spider has a violin shaped mark that is darker than the rest of its body. Another unique trait of the Brown Recluse spider is that is has six eyes that are positioned in a triangle instead of the usual eight. The Brown recluse spider is a hunter spider and doesn’t make webs. Instead, they go out at night and hunt other spiders and insects that are small enough for them to catch.
Brown Recluse Spider Control
The habits of the Brown Recluse spider can make them difficult to control. In most cases, they don’t invade homes on their own. Instead, they are brought in. Recluse Spiders hide in dark places during the day and come out at night to hunt. They will roam around until dawn and then find the next best hiding place until night comes again. They will often crawl in bags, boxes, and even clothing. There have been many instances where recluse spiders are found hiding in produce and are brought in with the groceries. To control Brown Recluse spiders, make sure you don’t bring any into your home. Inspect your groceries, and other store bought goods thoroughly before you bring them into your home. If you order a package, or have a box of items, go through the box outside your home and make sure there aren’t any spiders or other pests inside. To help keep Brown Recluse spiders from entering your home from outside, make sure your windows have screens and weather stripping is around doors and windows. Use pesticides around your home to kill any wandering intruder and seal any gaps or cracks big enough for pests to squeeze through with caulking glue.
Treating a Brown Recluse Spider Bite
If you or a household member gets bitten by a Brown Recluse Spider, you will want to seek medical aid. When a bite first occurs, wash the affected area with soap and rinse with water. Next, wrap ice on the bite for ten minutes then remove the ice for ten minutes then put the ice back on and repeat until you get medical attention.
