What Keeps Stinging Insects Away?

When it comes to hornets and wasps, there isn’t much most people won’t do if it will mean keeping them away. They can ruin BBQs and other gatherings quickly when they aren’t kept in check. Following are some simple tips to keep them away.
Cover Your Food to Keeps Hornets & Wasps Away: Did you know that hornets and wasps are not only attracted to sugary foods, but also protein? They will eat meat with the best of them. Their diet actually consists of other insects just as much as it does sweet foods. They will definitely be attracted to any of the food you would be serving at a BBQ. You can avoid them by ensuring your food is covered as much as possible. Leaving the food out for long periods of time after you are finished eating will also attract them.
Avoid Scented Lotions to Deter Stinging Insects: Many scented lotions and perfumes are designed to smell like the flowers you would naturally find in your yard. You should avoid these to avoid stinging pests that could be attracted to the same scents.
Wear the Right Clothes to Avoid Getting Stung: When you are wearing clothes that have large floral prints on them and look like a flower garden, you can be easily mistaken for flowers. Muted colors and tones on your clothing will make you less appealing to stinging pests.
Stay Calm if a Wasp or Hornet Lands on You: Most stinging insects will only attack you when they feel threatened. Nothing is quite as threatening as getting swatted at. If you have a hornet or a wasp land on you, the worst thing you can do is swat at it to get it to go away. You should stay as calm as possible and if the insect is lingering a bit too long, gently blow in its direction to encourage it to move on. Wasps and hornets are particularly aggressive and will actually chase you down if they think you are a threat.

Hornet & Wasp Stings

It is important to remember that hornets and wasps can sting more than once. A honey bee can only sting you once before they die. Hornets and wasps are particularly lethal because of their aggressive nature.
