How Do You Tell what Type of Wasp You Have in Your Wells Branch, TX Yard?

The weather is warming up and unfortunately, every summer, wasps send over 500,00 people to the emergency room due to stings! This insect is fairly non-aggressive unless their nest is disturbed or they are trapped somewhere. Unfortunately, they tend to build their nests where there is human interaction. Often times, we are completely unaware of the nest until it is too late. A-Tex Pest Management is here to help you be more aware of the danger wasps carry.

Solitary Hunting Wasps

There are two types of solitary wasps, one feeds off insects and the other off spiders. They build a variety of different nests. Some dig underground and build a nest there. Others build nests above ground out of mud. Some have even been known to build a nest in the hollow of a plant.

Social Wasps

Social wasps are the ones that most effect humans. All social wasps have some similarities. They all live in colonies that are established each year. During the winter they die off except for the queen who attempts a new colony the next season. Another characteristic they all share are “paper” nests made from a mixture of chewed up wood and saliva. There are two different groups of common social wasps.
Yellowjackets– This is the most common wasp involved in stinging accidents. They are most often seen building their nests down drains, around and under abandoned furniture, around playground equipment and in grills, to name a few. Because they primarily feast upon sweets and protein-rich food, they can be spotted around garbage cans that aren’t covered or outdoor dining areas during the summer months.
Hornets– These wasps are not usually involved in as many stinging accidents. They tend to build their nests high up in the trees or in shrubs. Sometimes they can be found in the eaves of homes as well. Their nests are often times large and hard to miss. They feed off other insects which makes them far less interested in humans. They aren’t found around outdoor dinner dates and garbage left behind.

How Do You Remove Wasps?

It is important to leave the removal of any wasp nests up to a professional. Because wasps don’t lose their stinger when they sting, they can sting multiple times. Once Enviortech Pest Solutions has removed the nest, the area can then be treated to protect your home from future wasp encounters. The interior and exterior of your home can be treated to ensure the problem is taken care of.

What Dangers and Risks are Involved in Wasp Stings?

One sting typically doesn’t cause a problem unless you have an allergy to wasp venom. If you are allergic however, you may experience a shortness of breath, difficulty swallowing and hives. If you are showing any signs of an allergy, you should seek medical attention right away. If you don’t have an allergy to wasps, common symptoms following a wasp sting are pain, swelling, and itchiness around the sting. Even if you don’t have an allergy to wasps, if you get stung multiple times you should seek medical attention. The complications of multiple stings can include kidney failure, muscle breakdown and even death. Young children and the elderly are at a higher risk.
