Solitary Hunting Wasps

There are two types of solitary wasps, one feeds off insects and the other off spiders. They build a variety of different nests. Some dig underground and build a nest there. Others build nests above ground out of mud. Some have even been known to build a nest in the hollow of a plant.

Social Wasps

Social wasps are the ones that most effect humans. All social wasps have some similarities. They all live in colonies that are established each year. During the winter they die off except for the queen who attempts a new colony the next season. Another characteristic they all share are “paper” nests made from a mixture of chewed up wood and saliva. There are two different groups of common social wasps.
Yellowjackets– This is the most common wasp involved in stinging accidents. They are most often seen building their nests down drains, around and under abandoned furniture, around playground equipment and in grills, to name a few. Because they primarily feast upon sweets and protein-rich food, they can be spotted around garbage cans that aren’t covered or outdoor dining areas during the summer months.
Hornets– These wasps are not usually involved in as many stinging accidents. They tend to build their nests high up in the trees or in shrubs. Sometimes they can be found in the eaves of homes as well. Their nests are often times large and hard to miss. They feed off other insects which makes them far less interested in humans. They aren’t found around outdoor dinner dates and garbage left behind.
