No one is excited to see bugs in their house. Unfortunately bugs are just a part of life that we cannot avoid entirely. Even the cleanest of houses will have bugs find their way into it on occasion. There are a few rooms in the house that tend to gross out homeowners more than others if they find bugs in it. The kitchen is one of these rooms. The thought of bugs getting into the food that you are going to eat is enough to disgust most people. Luckily there are some things that you can do to help prevent bugs from infesting your kitchen.
Most of the time bugs are making your way into your kitchen looking for the same thing that you are going to the kitchen for – their next meal. The best thing that you can do to keep the bugs out is make it as hard as possible for them to find food in your kitchen. There are many ways that you can do this.
Store Dry Food in Plastic Containers
First you will want to think about storing your food in plastic containers with tight-locking lids instead of the boxes or bags that they come in. Cereal, flour, rice, quinoa, and more all come in boxes and bags that are easy for bugs to make their way into. If you keep your food in plastic containers and always make sure that the lids are properly shut bugs will have to go somewhere else to find food. Open your pantry and see what you could put in a plastic container and move those foods into something harder for the bugs to get in to.
Do Not Leave Fruit Sitting Out on Counter
In addition to the food in your pantry many people also have some foods on their table or counters. Many households have a bowl of fruit on their table or counter so that their family can easily find healthy snack options. This is indeed a wonderful idea! If you do this you will want to make sure that your fruit is not left out too long. Fruit flies love to come and eat the ripened fruit and vegetables that are left out in your home. So make sure that your family eats them promptly or store them in your refrigerator once they become fully ripened.
Clean Up Spillages Quickly
Another thing that can help you keep bugs out of your kitchen is to make sure that you always pick up crumbs or spills immediately. Every family gets crumbs on their counter and floor. Many times the crumbs are so little that we do not even notice them. Even though the crumbs are too small for us to notice right away we need to remember that they are the perfect size of bugs! Bugs will make their way to your kitchen to make a meal out of the crumbs on the counters, table, and floor. Keeping your floors, counters, and tables clean will help you keep these pesky bugs at bay.
Wash Dishes in Sink Quickly
The last area of your kitchen that can attract bugs is your kitchen sink. Many times dishes are put in the sink that still have food on them. While those dishes are waiting to be done bugs will come in and snack on that food left on your plates, silverware, and bowls. Make sure that you do your dishes regularly and thoroughly clean your sink when you are done.
