Finding a rodent in your house for the first time can really scare you. If you see one rodent, there is a chance there are many more somewhere nearby. The good news is, there are ways that you can help get rid of rodents before the problem gets too big. Following these few tips by A-Tex Pest Management can help stop more rodents from wanting to come into your home.
Get Rid of Their Food Sources
Rodents will find anything to eat. This could be food in boxed packages, crumbs on the floor, pet food, and food in the garbage. The best way to get rid of rodents is to get rid of the food source. No, we are not saying don’t have food in the house, but we are saying seal up your food with airtight containers. You should also do this with pet food. With your pet food, don’t leave it in the pet bowl overnight. Clean up crumbs and food, including in your pantry, cupboards, kitchen, basement, attic, and wherever there are crumbs. Make sure that you clean your house frequently. This includes cleaning the dishes in the sink and emptying the trash. Mice are also drawn to water leaks so if you have any water leaks from the toilet, sinks, or tubs you want to get them fixed.
Eliminate Potential Rodent Nests
Your home is a perfect place for a rodent to find shelter. They will find any items such as old boxes and fabric to make a nest. If you have boxes with items inside, get rid of the boxes and use plastic or metal storage bins instead. Rodents cannot get through these like they can in cardboard boxes. Rodents love the attic, it is dark and secluded. They also will be behind appliances or in basements and crawlspaces. It is important that you cut back the trees and shrubs, so they do not touch your home. If they are close to your home, it makes it easy access for a rodent to climb the tree and get inside your home.
Block Any Points of Entry
Mice and rats will look around and find any entry points that they can get into your home with. These entry points can be gaps in utility pipes, cracks in the foundation, cracks under the doors or windows, gaps in AC pipes, or any openings in your siding. You should walk around your house and check all of these entry points and see if you can see any places where these rodents can get into your home. These rodents can squeeze through even the smallest areas, so make sure you seal off every crack and hole.
Use Rodent Traps
There are a few different ways that you can trap rodents. These traps can help, but may not be as effective once the rodents start breeding.
Snap traps- these are very affordable traps and very commonly used. These traps can trap the rodent with cheese or even peanut butter.
Glue traps- these traps are a little messier but still effective. These traps use glue to stick to the mouse or rat. Once the mouse or rat gets on the glue, they cannot escape.
Whatever trap you use, make sure you put it where the rodents are most active and check them regularly. You may also want to use a few of them around that area.
