As we proceed further into fall, it’s time to switch your mindset from keeping mosquitoes away from your summer BBQs and start thinking about the mice that are going to surely try to get into your home this winter. Having mice in your home is a nightmare. They nest and can cause significant damage to your home if you aren’t on top of it. However, there are some things that you can do to make it far less likely that mice will be able to get in. A-Tex Pest Management is here to share some tips to help you keep mice out of your house this fall.
Seal All Entry Points
You may not realize this, but there are places all around your house that mice will try to use to get in. Knowing what they are is the first step in keeping mice out. Here are some of the most common entry points that homeowners need to make sure they close up before the weather takes a turn and is cold.
– Doors & Windows: The most obvious place that you can direct your attention at first thing is the doors and windows into your home. You will need to look for damage to weather stripping and small holes or cracks that they can weasel their way through to get into your home.
– Attic Vents & Chimney: Two spots on the top of your home that you should be away of are the attic vents and the chimney. Make sure there is some sort of screen on the attic vents so that they can no longer get in. Also, put some screening on the chimney and check for any gaps that will allow them to get in that way.
– Utility Lines & Plumbing Pipes: Another common entry point is where the utility lines and plumbing pipes enter your home. The gaps around these lines need to be filled in so that mice can’t get through.
– Foundation Cracks: Mice don’t need a big crack or hole to get into your home. Make sure that all cracks and holes around your foundation are sealed off.
Focus on Food Storage Practices
Another huge part of attracting mice into your home is a source of food. If you aren’t storing your food properly, it will surely lead to mice. Make sure you’re storing food in plastic containers with tight fitting lids to avoid this issues. You should also make sure your trash cans have a tight fitting lid as well.
