Reasons Mosquitoes Are Drawn to Some & Not Others

There are various reasons that mosquitoes are particularly drawn to some. In fact, studies show that about 20% of people are irresistible to mosquitoes. Here’s why:
– Blood Type: Mosquitoes find those with Type AB blood irresistible. However, did you know that most people produce a secretion through their skin that clues mosquitoes into what their blood type is? If you are part of the 80% of people who fall into this category, mosquitoes are going to be especially drawn to you regardless of your blood type.
– Carbon Dioxide: Another thing that is drawing mosquitoes into your area is the carbon dioxide that you exhale as you breathe. They can sense carbon dioxide from a considerable distance. The more that you are exhaling, the more you are calling them to you. This means that those that are exercising outdoors at certain times will be more likely to get bitten.
– Body Heat: Another thing that drains mosquitoes in is your body heat. Female mosquitoes sense those with warmer body temperatures and will bite that person before those that are cooler. If it is an unusually hot day outside or you are exercising, they will be more drawn to you.
– Body Odors: There are certain body odors that are more appealing to mosquitoes as well. Things like sweat, bacteria and carboxylic acid will attract them. Your skin naturally has bacteria and fatty acids on it. There are different combinations of these on everyone. If they are mixed with sweat, it will enhance these odors, and some are more attractive to mosquitoes.
– Pregnancy: Believe it or not, mosquitoes are more drawn to women who are pregnant. This is more than likely because they have a higher body temperature and exhale a 21% greater volume of breath toward the end of their pregnancies than those that aren’t pregnant.
– Beer: Some studies have shown that those who drank a liter of beer over a liter of water attracted more mosquitoes. The reason for this doesn’t seem to be as clear, but it is something that you should consider.
